Vancouver Not Vegas

There are people in Vancouver who are trying to block the expansion of an existing casino. The casino is located in Downtown Vancouver and it is neighbouring 2 sports stadium. Following the success of a casino in nearby city, this company wants to have a mega complex with hotel rooms and more slot machine. The proposed casino will be built next to the stadium and that will include the demolition of an iconic building for the Vancouverites.

I can't say that I am against or for the development as I don't really care. It will not impact my life in any way. That's because I don't live in Vancouver and I also believe that Vancouver doesn't know how to plan its city. The lack of planning is killing me.

I don't really know how to describe Downtown Vancouver. It has lots of office buildings and lots of residential buildings as well. It also has the so called entertainment district with bars, night clubs and a theatre complex. Downtown is not a ghost town after people had gone home from work. Lots of people live and work in downtown.

I can see why people are against the proposed the Casino expansion. They don't want crime and visitors to go to their living space. They want to build a neighbourhood for themselves. They have spend lots of money in buying in the area, and they don't want to share it with common visitors. As we all know that visitors don't normally care about the well being of the nieghbourhood.

The proposed complex also sit in front of some expensive homes as well. Some people have spend millions in purchasing the condo that faces a creek. It is obvious that they want to live in peace. But how can people live in peace when they live in front of a park?

Vancouver, as a region, needs to figure out where the entertainments should be. However, people want to have their cake and eat it. The politicians aren't helping at all. They are not doing enough to help with the planning and forced people to live in cramp quarters.

Vancouver really needs to wake up and smell the frozen waffles. People need to stop drinking the kool aid fed by the politicians and housing developers.
